Henry Osborne, kt 1673. Member of the Brooke House Committee (1667-9) on war expenditure; in the third Dutch War a Commissioner of the Sick and Wounded. A brother of Dorothy Osborne, the letter-writer. Francis Osborne (d. 1659), author of *Advice to a Son*, one of Pepys's favourite books, was their uncle.

Dorothy Osborne's brother Henry (1618–1675), who was one of the small group of peers who escorted Charles II back to England, also strongly objected to the match, and kept a diary, partly in code, detailing his opposition to William Temple.

A 1650's portrait of Sir Henry Osborne (1619-1675). He was the founder and first treasurer of the Royal Hospital at Greenwich, and a patron of Sir Peter Lely, who stayed with him at the family's seat, Chicksands Priory in Bedfordshire.
The sitter is portrayed half-length, wearing black with a white collar.
