LINDSAY, JOHN, tenth Baron Lindsay of the Byres, first Earl of Lindsay, and afterwards known as John Crawford-Lindsay, seventeenth Earl Of Crawford (1596-1678), created Earl of Lindsay, 1633; leader of the covenanters; lord of session and commissioner of the treasury, 1641; distinguished himself at Marston Moor, and title and dignities of Earl of Crawford ratified on him, 1644; president of the parliament, 1645; took part in attempt to rescue Charles from Carisbrook, 1646; joined the coalition for Charles II’s restoration, 1650; taken prisoner, 1652; released, 1660; lord high treasurer, 1661; refusing to abjure the covenant resigned his offices and retired from public life, 1663.
