According to Pepys, Captain Browne "serves the office of the Ordnance at Chatham". Pepys also is of the opinion that Browne is "a rogue".

Capt. John Browne, Deputy Storekeeper (under his father, Maj. John Browne) of the Ordinance. They belonged to a leading family of gunfounders.
