Clapham, Surrey. A village of 92 houses in 1664, some 4-1/2 miles from the Standard on Cornhill, on the road to Richmond. A number of well-to-do Londoners lived or had country villas there, including Gauden, the Navy Victualler, who lived in a large house which after 1688 became Pepys's country retreat. He spent many happy months in his 'Paradisian Clapham' as Evelyn called it, and it was there that he died.

This article about Pepys', Gauden's and Hewer's participation in Clapham life mentions that when Hewer bought Gauden's house, he sold the farms Gauden ran to provide the victuals he sold to the navy.
