MY LORD

Your Honour’s enclosed to Mr Wheeler I have delivered, and sent the dozen stools, and half-dozen cushions. My Lady Pickering was herself here and see the books and silver bedstead well placed, and in the chest with the cushions there are five pieces of hangings, which her Ladyship hath sent. Upon the hangings I have put the letter I last mentioned with a ring in it, which the postmaster sent me, as unwilling to promise its security. I waited upon Mr Crew yesterday, who told me he thought your Honour might shortly have occasion for that £300 which I paid him the last week, and consequently advised me to forbear endorsing it, for avoiding its crossing out again, or too great a trouble in procuring such a sum otherways. This I have done, till I hear further to the contrary from yourself, and have taken a single acquittance for the money. My Lady Pickering will write fully concerning the hangings, as also what hath passed in the Committee, by this post. The Parliament it’s said hath renewed their lease, but for what time is not known. The capital dispute An anima (gubernatoris) debet generari vel creari1 hath lately warmed a great deal of breath there, and to be feared some blood too, not one openly abetting Generation but the graver of those two your Honour may remember present at Sir William Petty’s magnetic experiments.

Pagan-ffisher2 hath a solemn speech prepared for the 16th current the day of his Highness’ inauguration, to be spoken in the Cockpit one Tuesday next, and distrusting by his rhetoric he should loose the name of the Poet mendicant, he hath fitted a song, which Mr Hingston hath set for six voices, with symphonies between each Stanza for as many instruments the first of which (being at a practice at Mr Hingston’s chamber I remember) runs thus

Funde flores, thura crema [‘Pour flowers, burn incense,
Omne sit laetitiae thema Let there be a theme of joy,
Facessat quicquid est amari Let all bitterness and torment cease,
Tuba sonet et tormentum Let the trumpet sound.
Grande fiat argumentum The strength of the unconquered Oliver
Invicti virtus Olivari will be the great proof.’]

My Lord, your honour’s dutiful servant

SAM. Pepys
