For My Honoured Lord
General Mountagu at Hinchingbrooke
To be left at Huntingdon
8 December 1657
MY LORD
The things are come from onboard, and one of the boxes shall come this week to Hinchingbrooke and the rest kept till further order. The horse Roger purposeth to set out with tomorrow. I desire to know your pleasure concerning the Cedar. I was this day at Mr Crew’s, where I find all in health, but sad for Mr Edward’s death. Mrs Crew will soon acquaint me concerning the maid heretofore proferred to my Lady, till when I think it not best to let this maid know of her sudden going away; but I shall have a care to look over the inventory and goods. Sir Gilbert Pickering went out of town this morning. This week I shall also send razors, and battledoors for the children. Some talk there is of a plot, but I believe it is merely raised upon the late discovery of so many Jesuit-priests, whose copes and other popish vestments the Protector yesterday made some of his gentlemen put on to the causing of abundance of mirth.
My Lord
Your Lordship’s dutiful servant
SAMUEL PEPYS
