For the Right Honorable the
Lord General Mountagu at Hinchingbrooke, Huntingdon.
20 October 1659
MY LORD
The Commissioners of the Great Seal their Commissions determined the last night. The Judges have been at their several Courts to assign the term and ’tis expected they will all sit the time of their Commissions, which I think is to the 20th of November next.
Sir Henry Vane, Salwey, Whitelocke, Sir James Harrington and Lord Warriston are five chosen to manage the civil power; Fleetwood, Lambert, Berry, Desborough and Sydenham are five chosen to the martial power but I do not hear they have acted anything yet, though sat these three days.
Concerning the accounts I have enclosed a paper.
Sir Arthur [Haselrig] and Morley are gone into the Country.
I find many of your officers desirous to have your Lordship to their colonel again and intend to move for it. I have by Mrs Crew’s and my Lady Wright’s directions been with Scott, who is to wait upon them anon concerning the business.
Answers are waited for out of Scotland and Ireland, which (they say) hinders the army’s declaring what they intend. I have adventured to send your Lordship the enclosed pamphlets for your diversion.
Your Lordship’s dutiful Servant
SAM. PEPYS
