For the Honourable General Mountagu
at Hinchingbrooke, Huntingdon
15 December 1659
Lincoln’s Inn Fields
MY LORD
This morning proclamation was made for a Parliament and the City (as if satisfied therewith) have commanded all men to be quiet and forbear farther violence. I have done as your Lordship commanded me concerning the letter, but not delivered it, your excuse of ignorance of the affair (it being but for matter of debate) not being thought full enough. Wherefore it is advised that another may be speedily sent wherein your Lordship may own the same kindness from – as you do in this, and that your distemper at the time of the receiving of the letter, and the so sudden deciding of that question (wherein they desired your advice) now by this proclamation, be made your excuse. My Lord
Your lordship’s dutiful servant
S. PEPYS
Mr Crew (if your Lordship contradicts it not) intends to send for Mr Edward to his house at Christmas.
