"though I perceive great neglect and indifference in all the King’s officers in what they do for the King"....I am wondering what Sam is thinking here, indifference to the King as a person? indifference for lack of pay? not liking their work? Any thoughts?

"I think that the more stringent rules of fact-checking are relaxed when it comes to jokes."---from my own personal perspective and my own lackluster jokes, which tend to escape my typing fingers without due processing of my brain I do hope that this is true! Oooops, here's a perfect example now....
In regards to De Araujo's comment it is all a mute point becasue on Nov 25th Sam told us that "Great talk among people how some of the Fanatiques do say that the end of the world is at hand, and that next Tuesday is to be the day" and since we haven't heard from Australian Susan, who we know is ahead of us time zone wise then Australia is now gone anyway......
On a more interesting note (spoiler question here) I'll be interested to see how the Fanatiques respond when they find that the world doesn't end on Tuesday... do they just go on with their lives and predictions or do they break out the Kool-aid and take matters into their own hands?

"But who knocked up the knocker-up?"
Paul... the mystery is solved....
There once was a knocker upper
Who slept days then rose for supper
He sat quietly all night
Then woke all with great fright
Hitting doors with a monstrous thumper…
...now if we can just figure out the remaining great question, which did come first, the chicken or the egg, we will have solved all great mysteries and be ready for the end of the world on Sam's Tuesday (tomorrow!)

Sjoerd! What a great link, but now you have created a fashion dilemma for me....hmmmm..what "bandeau d'amour" to wear at the right time of day?? When reading about Sam's Navy adventures, obviously the fashionable a la Belle Poule would be fitting, for writing annotations, perhaps the en Ailes de Papillion panache might suffice.... but what about the rest of my day?

"do pleasantly call our Marmotte". Time to get a group weigh in here--I have a funny feeling about this and think that perhaps Sam is a little 'too" excited about Gosnells' arrival, etc. for his (and perhaps' Elizabeth's) own good--any others care to weigh in on this.
I just can't remember him being so full of anticipation about any other servant's arrival, but could be wrong here.

in Australia"
Gee Andy, if Australian Susan doesn't check in first thing on her Tuesday does that mean we're history?

"the absurd nature of Englishmen " --Paul, I also was taken by this sentence and noted this as an example of Sam's curiosity and appreciation of things that are unique and different as opposed to the average person who may laugh out of ignorance (and you are right,it wouldn't just be the English laughing at something different). To me this spoke to Sam's view of the world as he was so aware of novelty and delighted in these differences .

A recent PBS special about another famous man of the times, Sir Isaac Newton shared his private notes which show his prediction for the end of the world to be 2060. So in keeping with the Restoration theme of the times any sinners amongst us should go through a thorough conversion, perhaps a dramatic one ~~a la Charles II type perhaps ~~ somewhere around 2059 just to be on the safe side. I'm no expert on death bed conversions but it probably would be a good idea, and much more convincing of ones friends and family, if the conversion took place a little time before the actual end of the world so it had a hint of sincerity in it.

Queen Catherine’s birthday. Waller, the court poet presented her with this poem which was sung to her by Mrs. Mary Knight (who 5 years from now will be a mistress to Charles)…
This happy day two lights are seen:
A glorious saint, a matchless Queen.
Both names alike, both crowned appear,
The saint above, the Infanta here.
May all those years which Catherine
The martyr did for Heaven resign
Be added to the line
Of your blest life among us here!
For all the pains that she did feel,
And all the torments of her wheel,
May you as many pleasures share.
May Heaven itself content
With Catherine the saint!
Without appearing old,
A hundred times may you
With eyes as bright as now,
This happy day behold!
As Davidson comments (p166) “There was a certain unconscious irony of prophecy in his verses, for Catherine was to suffer heart-pains as great as the physical pangs of her patron saint throughout her married life.”

Glyn,
My reply was in response to your question above inquiring is Balty had asked for jobs from Sam in the past. Sam only records the 2 instances that Terry and I have noted above and they were both awhile ago. Other than that nothing directly from him to Sam but Elizabeth has noted his "sad condition" to Sam on occasion.
In regards to the nuptials -they were noted on Sunday June 15, 1662 when Sam noted "And then her brother came to see her {Elizabeth}, and he being gone she told me that she believed he was married and had a wife worth 500l. to him, and did inquire how he might dispose the money to the best advantage, but I forbore to advise her till she could certainly tell me how things are with him, being loth to meddle too soon with him"

There were never any other comments to date about Balty having a wife (or if he did truly get married at that time??). Perhaps if he did marry he was living off of the money that he supposedly got at that time??..but this would just be purely speculation. Of course, there could be a lot going on that Sam just hasn't written about.
