Charring Cross.
Historically, the name was derived from the hamlet of Charing ('Riverbend') that occupied the area of this important road junction in the middle ages, together with the grand Eleanor cross that once marked the site.
I wondered if SP would have known the cross? I can't find any references to it in the diary.

re titfer wearing; I believe Sam thinks he himself has been caught out over this issue when out and about in a park. he fails to doff his hat in the presence of the king and aids run up to him, putting Sam in a tizz. It turns out the aids just want Sam to come over for a chat with Mr. King.
Phew, a lucky break for SP.

Re the fox issue; any instances recorded of ladies being foxed?
I only recall SP remarking on gentlemen getting into this state.

I presume ladies did partake?

A review of the pub from 2017:

The Mother Red cap is a corner pub that is situated at the top end of Holloway Road and close to Archway tube station.
Once inside there is a U shaped room which is bare boarded, there is bench seating to the front with small stools, plus a drinking shelf on the left side which had chairs to sit on.
The TVs were showing rugby and there was a pool table to the rear left.
There were no real ales on the bar ,I had a drink of Worthington Cream Flow, which was a poor drink.
Not a pub to go out of your way to do ,but i was on a crawl and trying to do all pubs on Holloway Road.
It seemed friendly enough to me.

As mentioned, now closed.

and I abroad to my bookseller, and there staid till four o’clock, at which time by appointment I went to meet my father at my uncle Fenner’s.

Did SP have a timepiece or go by the many church spire clocks?

" ... a society where everything is upside-down." Immediately brought to mind an episode of Red Dwarf."
And Alice in Wonderland, for me.

About Sir William Batten

Re Batten passing away; SP mentions being owed money.
Is there any reference to this being paid back?
Are the son / wife, obliged to pay off outstanding debts?

Wounded in 9 places?
He'd better not go there again!
But seriously, do we know any more about this tiff?
He said he'd bonked her.
She didn't agree
She arranged for a few heavies to rough him up.
Any more details?
I love a good scandal

All good points and opinions raised, ( some time ago ).
Not sure of the term gas lighting. If it's from USA, I don't partake of colonial phrases.
My vote: after years of mental abuse Bess has melted mentality. Not bipolar and not nutty. But needs some TLC and stability from Sam. He's a very nawty boy who likes to play the field and have his own way. Selfish in extreme. But I like him.

Another sad reference to eyesight.
Often linked to writing or reading but did his problem extend to identifying people?

In Jan '62, Mr. H gives Sam his quarterly salary for duty to Sandwich.
But Sam gives half back.
