Indeed at that time and perhaps until the start of the 20th century, the Lords was more important. The majority of prime ministers in the 18th and 19th centuries sat in the Lords. The third marquis of Salisbury being the last, dying in office in 1903. Incidentally the Commons in the 18th & 19th centuries was dominated by younger sons of peers. This subsequently began to change with the Reform Act of 1832 and the advent of universal sufferance after Viscount Palmerston's death in 1865.

What a delight it must have been for Sam to be in such close proximity o all those fine ladies. I wonder if he's still in awe of Castlemaine's beauty? A beauty that he gave such high praises to when he saw her portrait at the painter's.

A full and exciting day and night. I liked how Sam complains of spending money on oranges and a box, at the theatre, it being full. Hard to believe that it's been over a year since we saw Mrs Bagwell.

I was most amused with Pepys's words concerning Pett. " I would not have the man suffer what he do not deserve, there being enough of what he do deserve to lie upon him." On first reading one got the impression that Sam was being sympathetic towards Pett.

This Cottenham would be the place from which the Pepys family would take the title of their earldom a 170 years later. Incidentally a new heir to the current earl of Cottenham was born a few days ago, so the Pepys family is thriving.

Bagwell would indeed not have been an innocent victim, she knew there was something to be had by accomodating Pepys. In fact in it was probably likely that Sam was the only person of some influence Bagwell knew.
