About Stempiece

Phil Gyford  •  Link

L&M disagree with the definition provided by Wheatley and instead say "The stempiece was the main vertical timber of the bow [of a ship]."

About Slops

Phil Gyford  •  Link

L&M define this as "seamen's ready made clothes".

Answers.com says:

1. slops Articles of clothing and bedding issued or sold to sailors.
2. slops Short full trousers worn in the 16th century.
3. A loose outer garment, such as a smock or overalls.
4. slops Chiefly British. Cheap, ready-made garments.

[Middle English sloppe, a kind of garment, from Old English -slop (in oferslop, surplice).]

Mary

The link to the new servant, Mary, wasn't working but is now, sorry.

Terry: I don't think this Mary is Mary Ashwell, who has been talked about as a "companion" to Elizabeth. I don't think Ashwell would be described as a maid and a replacement for Jane, but correct me if I'm wrong...?

Thanks to everyone for this discussion. On many forums a thread such as this would have snowballed out of control and be unrecoverable. It looks like we're a more friendly and reasonable place than that.

Thank you for apparently bringing this to a sensible conclusion -- let's now get back to business!

Some obscure words already have background pages. If you come across a word that isn't linked, but should be, do just email me to ask!

I've created a page for "Call-book" and linked the word in this entry.
